Holland is a medium sized nation that starts with holdings in both colonies and a decent navy, but has limited resources and land. It is in a position to pursue colonial growth but sooner or later must expand in Europe. It shares borders with only France and Confederation of the Rhine. (sample GUI empire file)
Economy
Holland has a small European population and limited space for production sites. It starts with a single ore mine and several coordinates of improved foodstuff, but is severely limited by the possession of only three forest sites for lumbercamps and two mountain sites for quarries. Thus, Holland will find itself short of wood for producing economic points (not to mention building ships) and stone for increasing population and fortifying barracks. Holland is well positioned for trade by merchant ship out of Amsterdam, or by baggage trains across central Europe. Holland's colonial positions are above average and both give potential access to mines and excellent trading prospects.
The Army
Holland is fortunate to start the game with eleven brigades of European troops, although these are no match for France's army, and are two less than the Rhine. Holland's available troop types are of good quality and the infantry have 32 movement points. The cavalry is mostly average with the exception of Garde du Corps which can setup in new brigades, albeit at a premium. Dutch mounted artillery is also more effective than average. Holland starts with six brigades in the colonies.
The Navy
Holland starts with a strong navy: 16 warships and 830 cannon. It is not, however, strong enough to challenge the might of the colonial powers. It will serve the Dutch well in purseing its goals in the colonies and eventually serve as the core of the Dutch navy if given the oppurtunity to pursue a period of shipbuilding.
Strategy
Holland must be in contact with its two neighbors, France and Rhine. Eventually you will be forced to expand in Europe, but it is important that you establish early relations with these nations. Holland is severly limited by geography, in particular with only three forest and two mountain co-ordinates, you will have limited supplies of wood and stone. This will dictate your long-term planning. Your troops in the colonies are well positioned to immediately conquer unowned territory, specifically some of the mines in South America, and the Indian islands Borneo and Sumatra.
Conclusion
Holland provides the player with the opportunity to develop a strong colonial position, as well as a strong European army. French intentions will dictate Dutch foreign policy early in the game, but later the issue of expansion will be paramount. Holland is a good medium sized empire in Austerlitz that offers a chance to explore all aspects of the game. |
