AUSTRIA-HUNGARY
Austria is one of the largest nations in the game with excellent troop types, a large population, and three mines. Despite its inherent strengths, Austria's location is a prime weakness: it borders six nations. Compentent diplomacy is required to give Austria time to establish its economy and produce an army capable of conquering Europe. (sample GUI empire file)Economy
Austria has some of the richest mineral resources in the game: two ore and one gold mine in Europe. It also has numerous coordinates improved foodstuff, and three coordinates capable of supporting vineyards. There are abundant forest and mountain terrain for lumbercamps and quarries, and several coordinates with large populations for factories, mints and weaving mills. Austria has a single Trade City, Vienna, but its central location gives its baggage trains easy access to Berlin, Munich, Paris, Warsaw, Amsterdam, Rome and Naples. A single shipyard in the south gives its merchant ships access to the Meditteranean and the riches of the colonies. The Army
The size of the initial army of 10 brigades is about average and like the other empires will form the backbone of the Austrian army for first few months. Austria has quality troops, though not as good as the elite troops of France. Foremost among these are Curassiers (EF=9) which have the highest morale factor of any non-elite troop type. Austrian Riflemen and Hussars both have can be trained to EF 8, which is above average compared to other empires. These strengths are balanced by the weakness of the line infantry (Fusiliers) which have EF = 6. Austria does not start the game with any Colonial Troop (Kt) battalions, and these are among the most expensive to build in the game. The Navy
Austria starts the game with a small, weak navy. The battle fleet is seven warships, including a 64 cannon cruiser, and 7 merchant ships. The fleet is too small to fight for colonial acquisition at first, and attempts to build up naval power may divert critical resources away from its land forces. Strategy
Austria’s many neighbours will be waiting to learn Austrian’s plans for expansion. Diplomacy in the early game is critical – neglect it for just a couple turns and you may find yourself the target of an aggressive alliance. Austria shares a long border with Prussia, thus this relationship is critical. Contact with your empires beyond your immiediate neighbors will help in the event of war ie. develop discourse with Naples to counter Italy, Holland to counter the Rhine, and so on. Of course, each of your neighbors is a potential military target, as well. With the weak navy most players give up on colonial ambitions, and either sell their warships or scuttle them for salvage. There may be something to gain by expeditions into Africa or Crete for example. If Ottoman Empire, Morocco, or Naples decide to throw you out of Africa there will be little you can do to prevent it; thus, diplomacy will be key. Austria could also attempt to form a trading outpost in the Caribbean and India. Regardless, success in the colonies will be difficult to obtain, and resources devoted to this aim may fatally weaken Austria’s European army. Conclusion
Austria is one of the strongest nations in Austerlitz. It has a large tax base, excellent troop types and excellent resources – enough that it need not confuse itself with colonial ambitions. It clearly has an easier road to greatness than some of its smaller neighbors. However, its success will depend on strong leadership and diplomacy early in the game, and great efforts to develop an economy to support the armies needed to fight its enemies.
